The longest shots I take are at 300 yards on a steel plate. The range I go to is limited to 300 due to terrain. It's fun to shoot that distance right now using my M1 Garand open sights but when I do get a scoped rifle I want to find a better place to shoot long range.

Longest shot on target yet is 1250 meters, with my 6.5x65RWS. Just put a new scope on it, a Zeiss 6-24x72 FLII.
I also just got a new Hart barrel, so I need to shoot some more to find the optimal load for my VLD 140 grs bullets.
Longest kill on a deer, is 400 meters, two shots, two deer. They fell instantly, used a Nosler Accubond 140 grs at 950 m/sek.
Great bullet.

Thank you Sean.
Long range shooting/hunting is my favourite thing to do, and now that I have the right tool for the job, I only need practise, and some great tips. Hope to get info from this website.

I need to get a good ballistic calculator, anyone here who knows a good one? I have a Zeiss rangefinder, it measures out to 1400 meters, so I'm all set there. Chrono is on its way, and I also have a weather station coming. Just need a program to put in all the datas.

This is the best program that I know of to date.  It is the software that I and a few others on the forum and it works great.  Here are a few links to some post about the software and where you can find it.

Me and my buddy just went out to the desert on Sunday. We were shooting at a rock about 3' across and figured it was about 750 yards away. We got pretty consistant results with his old M91/30 and my Kar98k but the ammo was all over the place so we had to re-adjust the hold each new box of ammo we used. Not bad for some old mil surp rifles and ammo.

I took my old Mosin Nagant (90 dollar rifle) with iron sights using wolf ammo (7.62x54) out to 650 yards the other day.
I was all around the steel but could not get contact.  I was just left or just right a bit low but could never get there.

I have the same problem with my M44 at ranges past 300 yards. Unless the target is pretty big I can't get shots to land consistently. The v notch is pretty big so it makes long range shots a little hard.

Was shooting 563 this weekend but shot 785 last hunting season at a stump.  Rem 700la Bell and carlsons medalist stock. Chanmbered and barreled in 300wsm by benchmark barrels. shooting norma brass and berger 175gr hunting vld's @ 3150fps.  Not doin too bad so far , alot to learn and need a new scope. the 3-9x50 nikon just isn't cutting it, thinking of a millet 4-16x50.

Ya a 3 x 9 would be hard to use.
Sounds like you got a good setup.  I keep trying to order a barrel from benchmark but something keeps coming up.
I was going to buy one on Monday but the distributor went out in my truck and cost me 400.00 bucks to fix so there went my barrel money.

Ya when I get there it will be a shooter.
Sounds like I should be shooting a 300gr'r at about 2800 to 2900fps.
I was talking to a guy in Aust. and he shoots one and said you can HEAR the bullet hit a deer at 1000 yards LOL

Sean, You'll appreciate the high ballistic coefficient and terminal performance of the 300 grain bullet. I love shooting this bullet through my 338 at long range. So far I have no luck to test the bullet on an animal at extreme ranges. Only one unlucky coyote fell victim to it at 480 yards. As a target bullet however, they're still reign supreme in my opinion. I use the 300 SMK on my last local competition and placed 3rd even though this was only my second time competing.

Here's my score

Nothing to complain about there that is some fine shooting.
I have been wanting to go 338 for a few years now but I am now in a place to do that and am really looking forward to it.
